Q. How Often Should I Change Crankbaits?
A. To be effective fishermen must not only determine the right crankbait, but also deploy their lures at the depth fish are holding/feeding. The first step is to make sure that fish are in the area. Watch other boats to see if fish are being caught or study your sonar unit to confirm the presence of fish.

Try to saturate the water column with crankbaits by using different lure models fished on various lead lengths. Using the data provided in Precision Trolling it's easy to target depths where fish are appearing on the graph by simply manipulating lead length, but don't hesitate to fish some lures well above those marking on the graph. Fish located near the surface often do not show up on sonar units.

If you're in fish and not catching them, begin by changing the lead length every 15-20 minutes. I prefer to start shallow and work lures progressively deeper. If a couple of lead length changes don't improve matters, change lures and repeat the process of varying the lead length until a fish is caught. Once you've caught a fish or two on a particular lure and lead length, duplicate what's working with other lines. Soon you'll have the bite wired.

P.S. Don't be overly concerned with lure color. Usually lure shape, action and depth are more important than color. Color should be thought of as a pattern refinement, not a pattern in of itself.
